On Thursday, February 25, 2010, Saks 5th Avenue and ING are sponsoring a fundraiser for the National Black Arts Festival with an evening of Fine Art + FASHION. This annual benefit raises monies for year round NBAF educational and humanities programming. More than 500 lovers of fashion, fashion industry professionals, and other Atlanta notables will be in attendance at this gala affair. Certainly, one of the highlights will be the honoring and recognition of local fashion artists Claire Buyens, Jhari Ponder and Marie Bastien. Both Buyens and Ponder are seniors in the UrbanCouture program at Grady High School. Buyens draws inspiration from designers like Jason Wu and Lanvin, but also says that experiences she has had while traveling that influence her style. Ponder says he sees fashion as any other medium of art and embraces that when learning, admiring and designing. Bastien is enrolled at Clark Atlanta University as a Fashion Design/Merchandising major with a concentration in both design and merchandising. Marie’s “After Six” collection will be featured in CAU’s annual Spring Fashion Show. These young fashion artists are already forging the way toward their dreams with vision and hard work. The celebrity host for this auspicious occasion is talented actress and successful author, Victoria Rowell. The venue is the West Wing of AmericasMart. Tickets are available for purchase at www.nbaf.org.

I did not instantly jump on the exposed zipper trend that emerged late 2008. In fact, I am still hesistant to wear it on something more formal. However, I have found some pieces that I would rock without hesitation. One is this cutout dress by Silence and Noise. The zipper is not only exposed but works its way into the cutout detailing in the back of the dress, making it the entire focal point of the dress. Even more impressive than a dramtic entrance, is a dramtic exit!

Another example of the exposed zipper as the focal point is this nude number by Silence and Noise. I love the juxtaposed feminity of the silk cami with the edgy yet well integrated zipper. Fun stuff!

I was on my way to get some last minute goodies last Christmas Eve when I ran into a vey coloful middle aged woman sporting flat purple leather boots and among other things, a Santa hat. “What was so cool about that?” you ask. “Everyone is sporting colored flat boots.” Well, hers (we’ll call her the Christmas Elf) were bright puple and leather, not suede, like a majority of the colored flat boots. The Christmas Elf’s boots were definitely vintage, something she had pobably rocked with a mini skirt in the mid-eighties. She had me lusting for them because they were simply different fom anyone else’s that I had seen- bright purple and leather, not too garish, still funky, but not cheap looking either. Generally, this would be a little flashy for my taste, but the fact that I hadn’t seen any purple leather flat boots and perhaps the lack of sunlight in Atlanta had me craving something vibrant and had me lusting after these retro numbers. I checked with Zappos to see if I could find a match that had the retro-eighties look. Just as I had suspected, I could not find a decent match. Everything was either suede, heeled, or dark purple. I did find two pair of suede boots that come in at a close second:

I received my daily update from Etsy, and a pair of sequined spats by jdotdesigns caught my eye. I decided to look at jdot’s other items, and I was totally inspired. Last year, my resolution was to not buy any new clothes. Ha! What a joke. I refused to make the same mistake this year, so towards the end of last year I committed myself to transforming the wardrobe I already own. This year for me is all about transformation. When I saw the rest of jdotdesigns items, I thought, this jdot has the right idea. Instead of me buying 10 pairs of trendy shoes or shirts that may or may not make it into next year, I can recreate what I already own with jdotdesigns spats and cuffs. Here’s the sequined spats that caught my eye and a of other a couple of other items that I like:
